<image:caption>Art project for the Botanical garden Kaliningrad (RU) Atelier Veldwerk (Onno Dirker, Rudy Luijters), 2014 — 48 Plants. Course of Spring emerged in connection with an international program of phenological research The Motion of Spring 2012–2014: Evidences of Climate Change Over 120 Years’ organised on the territory of the Kaliningrad region by the students of the legendary teacher of the Kaliningrad dendrology studies Galina Kucheneva. The art project 48 Plants. Course of Spring was implemented by the Baltic Branch of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts and Atelier Veldwerk (The Hague) in the official framework of the Netherlands-Russia year 2013. Atelier Veldwerk discovered qualities in both urban space, the complex history of Kaliningrad and the remarkable way in which the inhabitants of this city deal with public space, gardens and plants. The artists, looking for relevant information, were surprised to find so little literature about this topic in general, and on the botanical gardens in particular. That made them decide to make a ‘short guide’ to the Kantiana Botanical Garden. — More information Kaliningrad Garden leaflet 1 Kaliningrad Garden leaflet 2 Galina Kucheneva</image:caption>

<image:caption>The grounds of the Psychiatric Care Centre in Geel (B) is a patchwork quilt of old and new, exceptional and unexceptional open patches, shrubberies and gardens. The planting there is similarly varied. In the spring of 2006 the participants at Luijters’ workshop (patients and ex-patients of the OPZ) took to the open air. Armed with pruners, they scoured the grounds for branches, leaves, plants and flowers. Their only instructions were to ‘make a drawing of everything you bring to the studio’. <image:caption>Site specific artwork for the Historical Centre Overijssel, Zwolle, Overijssel (NL) Atelier Veldwerk (Onno Dirker, Rudy Luijters), 2009 Commissioner: Rijksgebouwendienst and city of Zwolle — In 2008, the new extension of the Historical Centre Overijssel (HCO) was inaugurated. Rudy Luijters was asked to create an artwork and suggested to crown the old building with a robust weather vane on which one can read: Tekst en uitleg (the explanation). In addition, this ‘explanation’ was made literaly with the publication of a booklet about art in public space of the city of Zwolle. As the HCO actually ‘explains’ the history of the region in word, image and sound, so the artwork Tekst en Uitleg endeavours to do the same with the arts in the city, also in the form of the publication. The booklet can only be taken by pulling the arm of the specially constructed book vending machine in the HCO, part of the artwork. — More information Tekst-en-Uitleg </image:caption>

<image:caption>Garden 'Jardin Essentiel', Parc Duden (B) Rudy Luijters, Summer 2016 Commissioner: Environment Agency, Brussels — ‘Jardin Essentiel’ is a herbal and medicinal garden conceived by Rudy Luijters, within the framework of the urban festival ‘Parckdesign’ in Brussels. About 25 species of plants, chosen for their different sensory qualities, were planted and used in different forms throughout a whole summer season. The field, a formerly dull lawn side of a park, is about 30 decares. People were particularly triggered by the different aspects of the project and as a result a group of garden-volunteers decided to continue maintaining and developing the herbal garden. — In the press (in French and Dutch): Fragment of tv documentary on Belgian tv Back to the essence in Duden Park Kruidenpluk het landschapspark </image:caption>

<image:caption>Artwork for city bridge, Nijmegen (NL) Atelier Veldwerk (Onno Dirker, Rudy Luijters), 2013 Commissioner: City of Nijmegen — Lights Crossing is the title of the work of art that is part of the city bridge De Oversteek (‘The Crossing’) in Nijmegen. The bridge was designed by the Belgian office Ney / Poulissen architecture & engineering. It connects the banks of the river Waal in Nijmegen at the same location where the American soldiers made their heroic crossing on September 20, 1944. During this military action, 48 soldiers lost their lives in one afternoon. The work of art consists of light and time, and refers to this historic event; during twilight, after the city lights of Nijmegen have been switched on, the 48 pairs of lights on the bridge will light one by one, at the pace of a slow march. The lights will start to turn on from the south riverbank, progressively illuminating the 950 meter long route, taking approximately 12 minutes to complete the ‘crossing of light’. After the last pair of lights on the north riverbank has been switched on, the so-called flood lights will be switched on as well, making the beautiful bridge visible at night in all its glory. — More information leaflet film about the work Sunsetmarch.nl Partners Atelierveldwerk.nl Ney.be In the press: Publiekgemaakt.nl </image:caption>

Luijters, 2003 (realised 2004) Commissioner: Sein (Stichting Epilepsie Instellingen Nederland) in collaboration with SKOR (Stichting Kunst en Openbare Ruimte) — In 2003 the Foundation for Art and Public Space (SKOR) commissioned a plan for an artwork in the grounds of Heemstaete, a clinic for epileptics in Zwolle. The creative complexity of the outdoor space in relation to the special group of users made it a highly specific demand. Rudy Luijters proposed an extremely focused and large-scale intervention: the planting of a fifty-year-old linden tree on the central axis of the grounds. The work included a booklet An Enduring Linden Tree for Heemstaete, Zwolle, which describes the historical, cultural-anthropological and botanical aspects of the linden tree. The drawings are organized in regular ‘botanical’ fashion in the ‘Flora Extramuralis’.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Marilandica, Contribution for the exhibition "Ijsselbiënnale 2017", Deventer Atelier Veldwerk, Rudy J. Luijters en Onno Dirker Curator: Stichting IJsselbiënnale — In the IJsselbiennale artists show their vision on climate change in the landscape of the IJssel, said to be the most beautiful of Dutch rivers. Rudy Luijters en Onno Dirker focused on the oldest Canadian poplar tree of the country (Populus Canadensis ‘Marilandica’), for which they drew the zone of the crowns projection. Next to that, a young tree, – a clone of the old poplar – is planted just outside the circle in which the two hundred years old lady is supposed to fall down within only a few decades. The artists show throughout these poetical and discrete interventions a permanent reflexion on the cycle of growth, bloom, derelict and new growth. It seems like the site becomes a ritual place that invites the visitor to experience and question the landscape in it’s continous dynamics. — More information: website IJsselbiënnale (in Dutch)</image:caption>

Luijters, 2006 Commissioner: OPZ Geel / Kunstcel Vlaams Bouwmeester — The grounds of the Psychiatric Care Centre in Geel is a patchwork quilt of old and new, exceptional and unexceptional open patches, shrubberies and gardens. The drawings are organized in regular ‘botanical’ fashion in the publication Flora Extramuralis. </image:caption>

<image:caption>10 tons of corn (grains), installation for ‘Power of Place’, Triennial Apeldoorn (NL) Rudy J. Luijters, 2008 Curator: Huib Haye van der Werf — A field of nearly five hundred square feet corn grains does not only reflect, very subdued, the incoming light, but also spreads a smell of grain, dust, food. Difficult to interprete, there seems to be visually zoomed in on a flat surface covered with pollen. Neither incolor nor in size this sweet yellow landscape is not even remotely reflecting the reality of the American landscape that largely consists of corn plants. Yet the work is an attempt to make sense of what corn is: a large granular image of food, global markets and industrial engineering. The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture (Fonds BKVB) organized the exhibition Power of Place. The exhibition was a component of the International Triennial Apeldoorn 2008 and was based on the landscape-study tour throughout the United States, initialized by the Fonds BKVB. </image:caption>

Luijters, 1999 Curator: Nicolaas Dings — For the contemporary art manifestation at different locations in Noord Holland, Rudy J. Luijters was invited to develop a site specific work of the historical garden of Aalsmeer. He created a Color Identification Chart that consists of colour squares taken from slides made on the first sunny day of spring 1999. The garden is then just coming into bud. All made-up colour names derive from the cultural, philological or botanical background of the plants and objects. The chart was available for all visitors. — In the press (in Dutch): Kamers gevuld met kleuren en pillen Kunstzinnige variaties op het rariteitenkabinet</image:caption>

Atelier Veldwerk made the basic design of the park following a thorough visual analysis of the landscape. After categorizing the various elements the designs were drawn for the polder bridges, fences, benches and other elements. Great care was paid to the nature of materials used. The design vision summarized existing functional landscape elements so that no new layer has been added. The landscape is conceived as a public playground and it is based on the implicit possibilities that the landscape and related elements can offer (climbing, strolling, hiding, jumping ditches, fishing, ice skating, etc.). As a consequence no explicit play objects are included in the park. — More information: Brochure The polder as a Park In the press: Voorbij de polderblindheid Kunst dringt het landschap binnen Onbedoelde esthetiek in hekken en bruggen</image:caption>

<image:caption>Garden of De Pont museum, Tilburg (NL) Rudy Luijters, Spring 2001 - Spring 2003 Commissioner: De Pont museum — Since 1993 the De Pont museum of contemporary art in Tilburg asked different artists to use the outdoor space of the museum as a project site. In 2001 Rudy Luijters was invited by the de Pont museum. He decided to transform it in a real garden by cultivating edible plants and herbs that could be used in the restaurant of the museum. Drawing on the plantings and the natural changes and occurrences, Luijters followed and recorded the different seasons for a period of two years. To this end he partially reorganized the garden and replanted it. All observations and registrations were reported in the museum’s quarterly news bulletin and in the blog Calendarium. Luijters project showed and articulated the implicit qualities of the garden as such; as a result De Pont continued The garden of Rudy J. Luijters which has been maintained as part of the museum ever since. — More information De Pont Museum, Calendarium </image:caption>

<image:caption>Rudy J. Luijters, 2017 Inner garden of a new retirement home conceived by Korteknie Stuhlmacher Architects In collaboration with Atelier Arne Deruyter Commissioner: OCMW Municipality of Machelen A vegetable garden is conceived in the patio of the newly constructed ‘Parkhof’, a retirement home in Machelen, near Brussels. The formal structure of this inner garden is based on the medieval hortus conclusus-typology, more specifically the hortus catalogi. As in a retirement home one benefits of collective advantages – no individual housing anymore – Luijters tried to regain a garden for all. The concept of use is based on recognition (salutary for the inhabitants, patients suffering from dementia); ‘Flemish Garden’ is an interpretation of the very common people’s garden. The fruit and vegetable squares form a vivid, always evolving surface throughout the four seasons. The garden offers a variety of strong sensory experiences, smell, touch and sound (of birds and insects) just as important as the visual aspects.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Garden design and maintenance, IJburg (NL) Rudy Luijters, 2005–2009 Commissioner: Jeanne van Heeswijk & Hervé Paparponaris — The Blue House is a project by Jeanne van Heeswijk & Hervé Paparponaris. It is an art project in which artists, writers and architects are invited to be residents of IJburg. IJburg is an entirely new part of Amsterdam – also literally, being built on artificial islands. In the project, the artists become part of this new community, influencing and questioning developments at IJburg with their work. Rudy Luijters – invited as one of the residents – was asked to design the garden, for which he chose all edible plants like fruits, flowers, leaves or roots. The inhabitants of the surrounded house block can ‘share the harvest’ and the children see blackberries and raspberries growing for the first time; more than that, the garden acts as a catalyst for social activity. — More information Blauwe Huis Engineering Society </image:caption>

The drawings are organized in regular ‘botanical’ fashion in the ‘Flora Extramuralis’.</image:caption>
